Hampton Yacht Club Spring One Design Regatta

A small but determined fleet of Melges 14s participated in Hampton Yacht Club's Spring One Design Regatta. Day One of racing was met with plentiful sunshine and a steady breeze 10-15 mph out of the North. Jon Mann of Norfolk Yacht Club earned a solid bullet, leading the way all of Race One. Greg Wermuth, also of Norfolk, fought back on Race Two, edging Mann out at the finish line despite going for a swim on the last downwind leg. Wermuth was first around the top mark on leg one of Race Three, but on the second beat to windward, Mann opted for the right side of the course, and with a nice lift secured victory for Race Three. Mickey Thompson from Wilmington, NC gave a solid effort.

Wind was very light and variable on Day Two, which led the Melges 14s to opt out of the day's racing. The podium was as follows:
1. Jon Mann
2. Greg Wermuth
3. Mickey Thompson

Hampton Yacht Club was very happy to have our class participate, and they look forward to more Melges 14s coming to future events. There is an open invitation to upcoming one design regattas June 30-July 1 and November 3-4. Hampton Roads is a great place to sail, and sailors will not regret the hospitality of Hampton Yacht Club. We also would like to thank East Coast Sailboats for their support and for providing a Melges 14 charter for the regatta.

Contact Hardy Peters of East Coast Sailboats for more information about Melges 14 sailing in this region.
